In a race engine the main bearing caps are subjected to loads much greater than those encountered in passenger car applications. As RPM and cylinder pressures increase, so does the need for a stable crankshaft support. Engine builders have known for a long time that coarse threaded bolts are not the ideal fastener in this environment. Studs are the preferred method of clamping the main bearing caps to the block to help prevent cap walk and chatter.
